OLIVE BRANCH, MS (WMC) -

Two Olive Branch parents are in jail on charges of child abuse after a five-year-old was rushed to the hospital.

Olive Branch Police Department said officers responded to check on a five-year-old at a residence in the area of Pleasant Hill Road and Goodman Road. Police said they received no answer when they knocked on the door.

Investigators eventually got in contact with an adult at the home. When officers asked about the child, they were told the child was with a family member out of state. The person did not provide any further information.

OBPD and the Department of Human Services continued their investigation and eventually found the child, along with five other children, inside the home.

DHS took all six children out of the care of the Jessye Ashley, 33, and Michael Walker, 36. The five-year-old was also taken to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

Neighbors said police were at the home for hours.

“They stay pretty much to themselves over there,” Betty Payne said.

Ashley and Walker now face child abuse charges. Their bonds are set at $100,000 each.

"You just don’t expect that in a neighborhood like ours,” Payne said.

Police have not provided any information on what conditions the six children were living in.

“I think it’s terrible; I raised 8 kids of my own. I just can’t imagine,” Payne said.
