MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy reports Memphis did not make the most recent cut for Big 12 expansion.

McMurphy said sources told ESPN that Air Force, BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, UConn, Colorado State, Houston, Rice, South Florida, SMU, and Tulane are the final 11 teams to be considered for expansion.

Tulane, Rice, and SMU all have high academic standing, but would do little for the League athletically.

The U of M, while rising in football, is not listed by US News and World Report among the Top 200 Universities in Academics.

If true, this will be a big blow for Memphis, who has been actively selling itself to the Big 12 for months.

Last week, a separate report narrowed the list of schools to nine—including Memphis

Schools that were cut earlier from expansion, like East Carolina and UNLV, confirmed they were left out of the game.

For its part, the Big 12 has not said anything officially about who's in or who's out.

WMC Action News 5’s Sports Director Jarvis Greer says Memphis fans should take these reports with a grain of salt. He says the next time we’ll get hard and fast information will be October 17 when University Presidents in the Big 12 get together for another meeting.

University of Memphis President David Rudd released a statement on his Twitter, but would not answer any questions about the Big 12 expansion.
