It's not the typical weapon one might think of to use against someone holding a gun to you. But, one robbery victim wasn't going down without a fight and he grabbed what he had near him.

"Once he turned around, they hold a gun and they try to shoot him," Yermi Toala said.

Toala said his uncle was going inside his house just before 9 p.m. when two men came up to him with a gun.

But it wasn't going to be that easy for these thieves.

"But uncle had a vase he broke. He yelled," Toala said.

A broken vase is what Toala's uncle used to threaten the two gunmen....and it worked.

"They got scared and they ran," Toala said.

The two would-be robbers took off in a white Nissan Maxima.

Toala's father was not intimidated by the men either, and he was looking to get justice. He started chasing the two men. The men shot at Toala's father, which terrified neighbors.

"I just heard about four or five shots. I peeped out the window," one neighbor said, who did not want to be identified. "My kids jumped on the ground and my husband was walking outside. His cousin grabbed him back in the house and brought him back. He dived on the floor too."

The crooks were still trying to get away with Toala's father hot on their trail. He followed them all the way to Mt. Moriah and Interstate 240, where he lost them.

Memphis police searched the interstate for the suspects, but didn't catch them.

Hispanics in that neighborhood have been targeted by robbers. Toala thinks the crooks are after Hispanics because they think they can get things that are valuable.

"We got good stuff. Maybe like they don't want to work. They just want to steal," Toala said.

There is not a good description of the suspects.

They were driving a white Nissan Maxima when they committed the crime.
