MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis Police Department is investigating two separate robberies in Downtown Memphis that happened over Labor Day weekend.

Two people said they were robbed near the intersection of Pontotoc Avenue and Second Street.

According to the police report, around 2 a.m. a man and a woman were walking in the area when two men approached them.  The men demanded the victims' wallets and purse.

The male victim said he refused to give the suspects his wallet and the woman refused to give them her purse.

The man then handed $20 to the suspects when they threatened to shoot, though no weapon was seen.

The suspects were described as 19 to 20 years old. One had on a blue shirt and one was shirtless.

Then, a woman said she was robbed at gunpoint near the intersection of Front Street and G.E. Patterson Avenue just before 4 a.m. Sunday.

"I feel like this area is very safe," downtown visitor Michaelyn Oby said.

Oby said she was surprised to hear of the robberies, but thinks visitors coming in for the holiday weekend could be targets.

"I do see a lot of out of state license plates," she said.

She said she's always careful.

"I'm always watchful. I always walk with someone of course. You don't want that to happen, but you do have to keep an eye out. But, she said that the robberies are not ruining her holiday weekend.

"I definitely would still come downtown. I wouldn't let that deter me," Oby said.

The two crimes do not appear to be connected at this time.
