MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Two men have been identified as suspects in the murder of a 26-year-old at a Whitehaven apartment complex. However, the warrants have been issued but the men remain on the run.

Memphis Police Department said LaCurtis Odom and Montrell Clark shot and killed Terrelonce Stanford on July 30, 2016. But, this is not their first run in with law enforcement.

Stanford was found in the street near Hickory Hills Apartments.

Investigators said Stanford tracked down the men who he believed stole his car. He confronted the men at the apartment complex, and they opened fire on him. Stanford was on the phone with police when he was shot.

Police said Stanford died on the scene.

"It's hard not knowing who killed my baby," Sharon Williams, Stanford's mother, said.

But, for Williams, that burden just got a little lighter after Memphis police issued the warrants for Odom and Clark.

"You can only begin to imagine and it's hard," Williams said.

Both suspects have criminal backgrounds.

Odom was arrested in 2013 for theft of property, 2014 for identity theft and forgery, and in 2015 for possession of burglary tools and criminal trespass.

Montrell Clark was arrested in 2013 for motor vehicle burglary.

Now, a family is forced to go forward without a loved one.

Stanford leaves behind an 8-year-old son and a child on the way. Williams said the 8-year-old is the spitting image of his father.

"Watching my 8-year-old grandson watching his father be buried, that was the hardest thing to watch," Williams said.

Although the warrants have been issued, questions still remain....especially from the mouth of an 8-year-old.

"He looked and he asked me 'grandma, why they have to kill my dad?'" Williams said.

Williams said she wants to see the faces of the two men on trial for her son's death.

"Turn yourself in. Face what you've done," Williams said.
