SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

A Shelby County sheriff’s deputy was arrested for trying to extort money from an alleged drug dealer.

Court documents said Jeremy Drewery, 41, of Arlington, Tennessee, demanded money from a person after he/she was arrested for drug charges.

Drewery is accused of offering an exemption from criminal charges to the person in exchange for the money.

The person then contacted the FBI to investigate Drewery, who was assigned to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Task Force.

Drewery is charged with one count of Hobbs Act Extortion. If convicted, he could face 20 years in federal prison.
