Stax Music Academy invited to perform at the Smithsonian

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Stax Music Academy is going to the Smithsonian. For a second time in five years, students from the Memphis-based performing arts school are invited to perform on the National Mall in Washington, D. C.

The latest invitation is to perform at Freedom Sounds: A Community Celebration, the three day grand opening of the Smithsonian Institution's new National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is scheduled for September 23 through the 25.

Other acts expected to perform include Public Enemy, The Roots and a number of other musical and spoken word performers.

NBC's Sunday TODAY Show will also feature the Stax Music Academy on September 25, so be sure to tune in to WMC Action News 5 that day starting at 7 a.m.

The Stax Music Academy's Freedom Sounds main stage schedule is Friday, September 23 from 3-3:45 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 4-4:45 p.m. and Sunday, September 25, 2-2:45 p.m.

Stax Music Academy (SMA) Is a program of the nonprofit Soulsville Foundation, which also operates the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Soulsville Charter School.

Students have performed in Italy, Germany, Australia, the United Kingdom, New York City's Lincoln Center, and many other prestigious venues.

The majority of SMA students qualify for financial need scholarships, which the Soulsville Foundation provides through its fundraising efforts.

The Soulsville Foundation is located in Memphis, Tennessee at the original site of Stax Records, which was home to icons such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the MGs, the Staple Singers, Wilson Pickett, Rufus and Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, Albert King, and dozens of others who ushered in the genre of Southern soul music and The Memphis Sound.
