MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Over 40,000 fans packed Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium to see Tennessee State beat rival Jackson State in another classic edition of the Southern Heritage Classic.

TSU racked up over 400 yards of offense, but the game stayed close. The teams took a 13-13 game into the 2nd quarter, and JSU actually led late in the 3rd quarter until back-to-back TSU scored on a passing touchdown and pick-six just 8 seconds apart.

Tennessee State would hold onto that lead, eventually winning the classic 40-26.

The fans were thrilled to be in attendance for such an important game.

"It's so big for both universities, because Memphis is like the halfway point between Jackson, Mississippi and Tennessee State,” TSU alum Taurus Glass said.

The halftime show, as always, was a big part of the classic.

"Are the bands more important than the football game? It is. The show starts when the band hits the field,” Glass said.

Fans were split on the decision for the battle of the bands, but there was no denying TSU’s performance on the field.

Between the pageantry and the football, the 27 year tradition brought classmates, friends and families together.

"This is like a homecoming for both schools,” Glass said. “And people see people here every year and they come back to have a great time."

A video was produced showcasing all the fun that was had at the 2016 Southern Heritage Classic.
