HUGHES, AR (WMC) -

Photos taken by a viewer in Hughes, Arkansas, on Tuesday showed what looks like a tornado, but that's far from the case.

It's a cold air funnel cloud. It's formed when a column of cold air is forced to rapidly spiral to the surface close to a nearby heavy downpour of rain.

They are actually fairly common during the summer months and rarely reach the surface.

Additionally, they rarely cause any damage because the strength of the rotation is at an absolutely minimum within the core of the funnel.

However, there is no doubt that damaging or not, it can certainly be an unnerving sight.
