Folkstone, UK (NBC) -

The time-honored speed sport of grasstrack racing was held in the UK. This style of motorcycle racing dates back to the early 1920s.

On Sunday, over 4,000 people watched on as riders from all over Europe competed for the title of grasstrack champion.

James Shanes went one better than last year as he won the 2016 European solo championship. Shanes, a 19-year-old mechanic said it was his dream to win the championship after coming second last year.

"Today started off as a bit of a disaster with belt failures and a little off in one of the qualifying heats. To find out I just scraped into the B final was absolutely amazing and then to get second in the B final and to go out and win the A final is just an absolute dream come true for myself," Shanes said. "I hope next year brings bigger and better things."

Shanes will now set his sights on the world long track title, a series of six rounds next year.
