MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A housing complex residents described as 'dangerous' just weeks ago has now caught fire.

Tenants and community leaders spoke in early September about the dangers at Fox Hollow Town Homes. They said the dangerous conditions included rotting trash, caved in roofs, broken windows and more.

At around 11 a.m. Wednesday, Memphis Fire Department received a call that a fire sparked at the town homes.

“When we arrived on the scene it was heavy fire visible from the second floor. [Firefighters] gained entry and were able to bring this fire under control in approximately 11 minutes,” Memphis Fire Department spokesperson Lt. Wayne Cook said.

Cook said the resident was not home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters.

The cause of the fire has not been determined yet, but fire officials said the mounds of trash, tires, and mattresses outside of the complex did not play a factor in the fire.

“We emphasize working smoke detectors. Maintain one in your residence. If you need or do not have one, contact the Fire Museum of Memphis. We’ll come out and put one in,” Cook said. “And also, have a secondary means of exit. Know how to get out of your home with an evacuation plan and plan it and practice it regularly.”

The Department of Code Enforcement declared the buildings 'dangerous' on August 30.

Neighbors are asking for more to be done to help improve the safety of the complex.

"I've watched them go from being presentable to deplorable," Sandra Jones, neighbor, said. "As you can see, there's rubbish, tires, backup on the curb that has been here for weeks."

Attempts to reach the managers of the town homes has been unsuccessful.
