Mid-South "Biker Dads" are on a mission to mentor. Right now more than 1,700 children are on a waiting list in Memphis to be connected with volunteers in the community willing to share their time and attention.

The bikers plan to partner with the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and Memphis Grizzlies mentor program.

"It could be as simple as an hour a month doing something special with the child or other kids needing something everyday," Tom Lewis a.k.a. Biker Dad Hoss said.

Inspired by the WMC Action News 5 Biker Dad blog, these motorcycle enthusiasts rolled through downtown on their bikes to recruit.

"We decided that our efforts shouldn't be to recreate a new mentoring program, but to be a recruitment effort for any program that needs mentors," Lewis said.

"We want to show that what they see on the outside is not necessarily what you see on the inside," Terrence Glasgow a.k.a. Biker Dad Deacon said.

Most mentors will target middle school girls and boys.

"They are old enough to know better, but young enough to need some help," Lewis said.

The men held a training Wednesday afternoon at FedEx Forum and said it is one of many Biker Dad recruitment efforts.

The first ten volunteers trained and reviewed the necessary qualifications.

"Every program that we will recruit for has their own screen process so we don't plan to recreate the wheel," Lewis explained.

Connecting Memphis children with the motorcycle community, the Biker Dads said they hope this is the first chapter of what becomes a national program.

"Those with good credentials, good experiences, good positive attitude, come out and support the community and the organization," Glasgow said.
