DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) -

The DeSoto Central High School band director was arrested on domestic violence charges.

Dennis Cox, 55, was arrested at 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Cox is now out on bond and back home. His neighbors were shocked to hear a man they called quiet was arrested.

"Oh my goodness. I can’t believe it. I just couldn't believe it," neighbor Judy Pugh said. "It really does surprise me about this man. It makes me get shivers, because it surprises me so much."

On Wednesday night, residents of the Hernando neighborhood said DeSoto County Sheriff deputy vehicles covered the area in front of Cox’s home.

"We haven't had any other violence in this neighborhood at all that I know of,” neighbor Gerald Pugh said.

Deputies would not go into details, but said they were called to the home for a disturbance.

Cox was arrested and charged with domestic violence and simple assault.

He has been the band director since the program started at DCHS. He is also a consultant for band programs at the college level.

"I don't think anybody that is anybody that is arrested for domestic violence should be around children at all,” Pugh said.

DeSoto County Schools did not comment except to acknowledge Cox’s involvement in the arrest.
