A member of our armed services gave their daughter a surprise of a lifetime Thursday morning.

It was a normal Thursday for most of Mrs. Matthews' kindergarten class at Donelson Elementary. But that wasn't the story for Ava Blake, who received a big surprise.

Petty Officer Chris Blake has been aboard the U.S.S Boxer for the last 9 months, going to places like Beirut and all over the world. But now he's home.

"It's going to be amazing," Blake said. "I've been waiting on this moment for a long time now."

All he'd been thinking about is opening the door and seeing Ava's face.

“Dad!” Ava exclaimed as she jumped into her dad’s arms.

“I missed you so much,” Blake said.

"I'm so happy right now," Blake later said. "This is what I've been waiting for. She's the reason why I fight and why I go on deployments."

To Ava, it's felt like forever since she saw Daddy.

"Who is this guy sitting next to you?"

"I don't know," Ava responded as everyone laughed.

"I'm your daddy!" Chris Blake exclaimed as he laughed.

But now they can catch up on lost time. And all they really want is to share moments like these.

"I know what we're going to do. We're going to go shopping for your costume for Halloween!" Blake said.

"I want to be a white ninja," Ava responded.

"A white ninja? Alright!" Blake said.

But, their first stop was the cafeteria to enjoy their first meal together in 9 months, all because her daddy is one of our heroes.
