MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

This may be the only time when something that sounds too good to be true actually is true.

Shopping rebate sites, or cash-back sites, can legitimately help you earn significant savings and actual cash while shopping both big-box and mom-and-pop retailers online.

Yes, it's true: you can legitimately get paid to shop online.

"I've easily been able to save a couple hundred dollars when I'm already buying my normal stuff, and it collects throughout the year," said Jessica White, blogger of the savvy shopping site MyMemphisMommy.com, about cash-back sites.

Kyle James, founder and blogger of RatherBeShopping.com, said cash-back sites earn affiliate commissions from their retail partners, which include the likes of Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and Macy's. Instead of shopping the retailers' websites, you join a reliable cash-back site and shop the affiliated retailer through the cash-back site. The cash-back site will then pass a percentage of its retailer commissions on to its members. "It doesn't take but just a second to go on the site, find the retailer you're shopping at and go through their link to get the rewards," White said.

James said the best ones are free. Most of them include coupon codes you can stack on top of their cash-back benefits. "You're going to get the coupon savings, and you're going to get that cash back, so it's free money," James said.

James posted what he calls the 11 best cash-back websites. He chose them based on the quality of their retailer partnerships, their cash-back percentages and their cash-back guarantees. For example, BeFrugal.com offers a 125 percent cash-back guarantee. "If you find another cash-back site that's offering more than BeFrugal is currently offering, just let BeFrugal know and not only will they match it, but they'll give you another 25 percent in cash back," James said.

The sites pay out their cash-back benefits either through a PayPal account, by check or by gift card. "A lot of these sites will actually let you buy gift cards, get cash back on the gift card and then use the gift card to make a purchase and get even more cash back on that," said James. "That's kind of a cool way to double-dip on your savings."

The prices on cash-back sites are often lower than their retail partners' in-store prices, so that's additional savings on top of the cash-back benefit.

One of James's recommended sites, MyPoints.com, grants points towards rewards instead of cash. The more points you accumulate, the more merchandise you can redeem. "They also let you use them on hotel bookings and airline tickets, so if you're doing any traveling, you can add up those points pretty quickly," said James.

White said she has earned as much as 35 percent cash-back on a single purchase by playing the sites' cash-back guarantees against each other. "I've been able to save enough money over the year in cash-back to cover my Christmas shopping," she said.

The good cash-back sites also offer mobile apps, so you can track their prices and cash-back rewards on the go.
