It’s been a tough week in Memphis after a tragic house fire killed 10 people. But in times like this, the community pulls together to help those who need it most, which sheds light on five great things that happened this week despite tragedy.

Community steps up to help the families of 10 people killed in house fire

After a house fire in South Memphis claimed the lives of 10 people, we’ve seen overwhelming generosity from countless strangers who want to help the families. The Mid-South community stepped up to make sure the families were well taken care of. Here’s how you can help.

Soldier surprises daughter at school

A little girl got the surprise of a lifetime Thursday morning during her kindergarten class. Ava Blake's dad, Navy Petty Officer Chris Blake, has been aboard the U.S.S. Boxer for the last nine months, but now he's back home. He surprised her with a visit during class at Donelson Elementary.

Biker Dad mentors

More than 1,700 children are on a waiting list to be mentored by Mid-South biker dads. All will be connected with volunteers willing to share their time and attention. The bikers plan to partner with the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and Memphis Grizzlies mentor program.

New St. Jude floors

State-of-the-art technology highlights new rooms at St. Jude Children's Research hospital. The expansion includes 51 new rooms, color changing mood lighting, interactive touch screen walls and more.

901 Rocks: geocaching with a twist

901 Rocks are colorful painted rocks, spreading smiles around town for others to find. The project was created to get kids to spend more time outside, and away from technology.
