MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Thousands of volunteers took time out of their Friday to help non-profit organizations across the Mid-South.

It's all part of United Way's Day of Caring.

Volunteers in Memphis made 10,000 food packets. Each one can feed six people.

Those packets will go to families in need in third-world countries.

"You realize that you're going a long way towards helping people," volunteer Chris Wells said.

Wells volunteered his time Friday to help, but he didn't go alone. He brought his daughter, Allison, and his son, Collin.

"There's a lot of people out here there that don't have food who aren't as fortunate as us," Allison said. "I'm just glad to be helping them."

The same volunteers collected toiletries to send to flood survivors in Baton Rouge.

"Understand that they are the privileged, that there are other folks that are delighted to get these boxes that they have personally filled." Dr. Kenneth Robinson of United Way said.
