A passenger at Memphis International Airport tried to bring a loaded handgun onto an airplane.

Transportation Security Administration found the gun at a security checkpoint inside the passenger's carry-on luggage.

TSA agents immediately alerted airport police, who removed the gun and the passenger from the checkpoint.

“Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the checkpoint,” said Mark Howell, TSA Regional Spokesperson. “Our advice is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.”

Travelers are allowed to fly with weapons, but they must be properly stowed in checked baggage. See TSA rules and regulations for details.

TSA said this is the 25th gun stopped by security at the Memphis airport so far in 2016. A total of 28 were found at MEM last year.
