MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis, Light, Gas & Water will temporarily shut down its Mallory Pumping Station on October 3.

The shutdown, which is required as part of maintenance, will last until April 30, 2017. MLGW says the maintenance will create a more reliable water system.

Mallory Pumping Station serves customers in areas downtown, midtown, and north of downtown. Customers in and around the Mallory Pumping Station service area may experience some discoloration in the water during the shutdown.

Anyone who notices discoloration should flush their pipes. Do so by opening the faucet farthest from their water meter until the water becomes clear.

Discoloration is caused by sediment in the service lines. It does not mean the water is toxic or dangerous in any way.

If anyone experiences prolonged discoloration or low water pressure, contact MLGW Customer Care Center at 901-820-7878.
