MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Investigators said a man wanted for child rape ran from U.S. Marshals on Monday morning, and even jumped into an apartment lake while trying to escape.

Alvertis Brown, 25, was arrested shortly after getting into a fight with a Memphis police officer at the Edens at Watersedge Apartments.

"I don't know if he stays around here, I just seen him around here about two or three times," said Nick Sutton, who lives nearby.

The U.S. Marshals said Brown also had warrants for aggravated sexual battery, aggravated assault, felony drug charges, and more.

"Oh my God. Well I thank God that they got him," neighbor Lula Cunningham said.

When the U.S. Marshals showed up, they said Brown was hiding. Before his capture, investigators said he climbed from a balcony and jumped into the lake, trying to escape.

Neighbors said they still can't believe that investigators said Brown was wanted for child rape.

"It's really sad that people would stoop that low and mess with a child. They ought to be hung up by their toes," Cunningham said.

Court records show Brown has been arrested before on charges of traffic offenses, theft, violation of probation, aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and more.

"We don't need nobody around here like that. Too many kids running around here," Sutton said.
