A mansion said to have inspired the phrase, "keeping up with the Joneses" is on the auction block.

Wyndclyffe Mansion was built in 1853 for New York City socialite Elizabeth Schermerhorn Jones. Following its construction, owners of homes nearby started building even bigger mansions, which many believe gave birth to the aforementioned idiom.

The mansion has housed Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, and a Pulitzer Prize winning author. However, it has been vacant since the 1950s.

The deteriorating mansion was once part of an 80 acre estate. That property has since been divided up. The mansion now sits on a 2.5 acre property, giving the whole property an estimated value of $313,000.
