SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

Shelby County Health Department confirms a person has died from West Nile Virus in Shelby County.

The victim has not been identified due to patient confidentiality laws.

The department is encouraging residents to assist in reducing the mosquito population and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites.

West Nile is contracted after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Although the virus can be a serious disease, most cases in humans are mild infections, resulting in fever, headache and body aches that only last a few days, according to SCHD.

SCHD encourages residents to practice the four D’s to prevent the virus:

  • Defend yourself by using insect repellent.
  • Dress in long sleeve/pants, loose and light clothing when outdoors.
  • Dusk/Dawn stay indoors during this time to avoid mosquitoes when they are most active.
  • Drain standing water and install or repair window screens.
