MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

More than seven thousand people woke up early and headed downtown for this year's St. Jude Run Walk to fight childhood cancer. This is the second year for the event here in Memphis. Hundreds of run/walks were held around the country Saturday to raise money for St. Jude. $600,000 was raised by Memphis runners and walkers. Nationwide organizers say the events will raise $10 million.

The run/walk started at 9 a.m. Participants made their 5k trek around downtown, marching down historic Beale Street, enjoying scenic views of the Mighty Mississippi along Riverfront, before ending back at the St. Jude campus. Local cheerleaders and volunteers stationed themselves along the route to cheer runners and walkers on, and to hand out water.  Some people ran the race, while others walked, strolled, or even danced their way to the finish line.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is located in downtown Memphis. It was founded by Danny Thomas in 1962 to treat children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. The hospital serves families here at home and around the world. No family is ever charged for the care their child receives at St. Jude. The hospital, its doctors and researchers have changed the way children are treated. An example of their amazing work is this... In 1962, a child diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia has a 4 percent chance of survival. Today, a child with the same diagnosis has a 94 percent chance of survival.

It costs nearly $2 million dollars per day to run St. Jude. The money is raised year around at events like this one, the upcoming "Thanks and Giving" campaign, Dream Home giveaways and by local groups who work hard to support the kids of St. Jude.
