Making the Grade: Ellis and Hilliard

Henry Brooks Adams said, "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." Meet two Rotary Award Teacher of Excellence winners who are affecting eternity and "Making the Grade." Barbara Ellis has been teaching for 35 years. The Idlewild Elementary 4th grade teacher is so dedicated to her students, she once even cut of her own hair when one of her students, a St. Jude patient, began losing her hair following cancer treatment. Ellis said every day in the classroom is an adventure. Dr. Shirley Hilliard, a counselor at Caldwell Elementary school has 28 years experience in education. She believes that, despite the troubles many students face today, all of them can achieve with the right help. Hilliard said it's up to educators to make sure each child has a solid foundation to become a productive citizen.

    Women from all over Memphis came together for the first ever "I Am Her" Women's Conference in Whitehaven. The conference brought in dozens of female business owners to showcase their products, including Kim Owens, who started Enchantment Beauty Salon 30 years ago.
