A group of Shelby County students gave their teacher, Kittrel Robinson, a special send-off Tuesday before his deployment to Iraq in October.

Robinson is an In-School Suspension (ISS) teacher at Barret’s Chapel by day, a police officer by night, and a military service member who is committed to making a difference. He has been protecting Memphians for 16 years and is somewhat of a hero to the children at Barret's Chapel.

"I'm genuinely doing it from my heart," Robinson said. "I just feel like the vision I have for those kids is something that will benefit them in life."

While Robinson has helped his students turn their lives around, it is time for him to help others. During his deployment to Iraq as a captain, he will be responsible for facilitating injured soldiers on the battlefield to get them to the doctors they need.

"Mr. Robinson, he's amazing," student Ayzia Newby said. "He helps all the kids. He helps all of us."

Captain Robinson said he plans on checking on his kids at the school while he’s away. He said the connection to the kids will continue through planned Skype/Facetime appointments with them every Monday.

For everything you do for the children, our community, our city, and this great nation, WMC Action News 5 says THANK YOU, Captain Robinson, and our thoughts and prayers are with you as you serve our country.
