A mother of a 2-year-old was shot and killed late Tuesday night in Shelby County.

Investigators said Marnesha Scales, 18, was one of three people sitting in a car on Arbor Lake Drive when another car pulled up and two people shot into their car.

Scales was rushed to the hospital where she later died. The other two people in the car were not injured.

Chasity Ward said her niece was always fun to be around.

“Funny, the life of the party,” Ward said. “Always had something funny to say. Always checking me in particular."

Deputies said Scales was behind the wheel when two gunmen approached both sides of the vehicle and demanded everyone to get out.

Investigators said Scales hit the gas and drove off instead while the suspects opened fire.

"At 18 years old, you think about --you're just starting to get out into life,” Ward said. “Start work, go to school, start trying to find your way in life. Being a young adult mother, that’s exactly what she was doing.”

Her family said Scales’ boyfriend was one of the other people in the car.

Her death puts Shelby County at a new record high for homicide cases—topping off at 14.

Now, the family is left to raise 2-year-old Chloe without her mom.

The family is hoping anyone with information will come forward.

“If you have any, any God in you; if you can't do it, talk to someone who can do it and come forth. This was very senseless, and it's hard for all of us,” Ward said.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office has not released any suspect information. They said there is no motive behind the case.

Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call Shelby County Sheriff's Office immediately.
