MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Memphis police are chasing two people, one was wearing a clown mask, who officers said robbed a Memphis bank.

The robbery happened at Bank Tennessee at 5540 Poplar Avenue.

Investigators said two suspects entered the bank armed with explosives and took an undetermined amount of cash.

The suspects drove off in a car, but details of what type of car are still being investigated.

"Desperate people do desperate things in desperate times,” Carol Paterson said.

Many people in the area said they were surprised about the robbery.

"When I was growing up things were--seems like it was a much different world,” Michael Lander said. “It's sad, but it seems like this kind of stuff is almost becoming routine."

What’s not routine is using explosives to rob a bank.

"It's frightening,” Don Paterson said. “It is truly frightening that something awful could have happened."

The robbery appears to be part of a growing trend in America—clowns.

"When I was a kid, clowns were something that everyone kind of accepted,” Lander said. “Now they've got this whole different persona."

After a string of clown sightings—even some in the Mid-South—Lander said the clown mask on the robber carries a different meaning.

"They got a different persona than when I was growing up,” he said. “Something to be afraid of now, instead of something to be entertained by."

One of the suspects is said to be wearing a blue shirt and gray pants. The other had on the clown mask.

Police said they have several camera angles of the robbers and are hoping to figure out who they are.

Police said no one was injured during the robbery.
