A recent report by an affiliated United Nations group argues African Americans are owed reparations from the United States because of the country’s slavery history.

According to the Washington Post, the United Nations’ Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent sent its report to the UN Human Rights Council. The report indicates a continuous link between current injustices African Americans face and darker times in American history.

The group said police killings of unarmed African American men has created a “human rights crisis” that should be addressed as soon as possible.

The report also pointed out a time when lynching happened, calling the act a form of racial terrorism.

“Lynching was a form of racial terrorism that has contributed to a legacy of racial inequality that the United States must address. Thousands of people of African descent were killed in violent public acts of racial control and domination and the perpetrators were never held accountable.”

The panel suggested reparations could come in various forms, such as “a formal apology, health initiatives, educational opportunities, etc.”
