A Better Mid-South: Cummings Elementary honors Jett family

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Editorial by Tracey Rogers, Vice President and General Manager of WMC Action News 5:

I had the privilege to attend the Celebration of Life Ceremony held for the Jett children at Cummings Elementary School.

Five of the Jett children who died in a house fire in South Memphis: Alonzo Ward, Diamond Jett, Ernest Jett Jr., Cameron Hollingsworth-Jett, and Kerra Jett, were remembered by their classmates, teachers, faculty and school system leaders during the ceremony.

We also celebrated the strength of their father, Ernest Jett Sr.

I found out Jett was very involved with his children at school, and he didn't just take care of his own children, he would help other students too.

For example, he would buy other students school uniforms when they didn't have them.

That's why it is fitting that the Jett family is supporting a memorial to his children that will help so many.

Shelby County Schools, SchoolSeed and WMC Action News 5 will raise money all day Thursday to buy a washer and dryer for the new family support center at Cummings Elementary.

The money will also be used to fund a clothes closet for the school.

The legacy left by these precious children will make an even Better Cummings Elementary and A Better Mid-South.
