MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

If you have unpaid traffic tickets from 10 or more years ago, this is your best chance to get them paid off.

The City of Memphis is rolling out a city-wide amnesty program to help some people get their lives on track.

"Years ago of course, I was driving, and my license was suspended because of unpaid tickets,” Memphian James Trenell said.

Trenell has been without a driver’s license for more than 20 years.

"It's been awhile since I've driven a vehicle, of course, so I'm taking the initiative of trying to get my license back,” Trenell said.

For all that time, he’s had to plan around public transportation or rides to get around.

"The anxiety of not having a driver’s license is like unbelievable,” Trenell said.

When Trenell went to city court clerk Kay Robilio’s office Thursday, he received a pleasant surprise.

"There are options, which I didn't know exist. And I was like overwhelmed,” he said.

The city has a special amnesty program for unpaid traffic tickets. Memphians with unpaid tickets of 10 or more years can pay their tickets off at half price.

"It's like winning the lottery, the Powerball. Yeah, it's that amazing,” Trenell said.

Once the tickets are paid off, Trenell’s license can be reinstated.

“That is a relief,” he said.

Trenell was one of the first to take advantage of the amnesty program, but anyone with unpaid tickets of 10 or more years can get their tickets paid for half price through the end of the year. All it takes it getting in touch with the court clerk’s office.

"It works; it's helpful,” Trenell said. “It gives you peace of mind. You just feel good about it."
