Memphis soccer begins conference play with a win

The University of Memphis soccer team went to 7-2-1 for the season and 1-0 in conference play as they defeated Temple in the American Athletic Conference on Thursday.

Jessica Lisi put the winning goal in during the 57th minute of play, giving Memphis the 1-0 victory over Temple.

Head Coach Brooks Monaghan said the weather conditions posed a little bit of problem for the team, but he still believes they could have played better despite the conditions.

"It was windy, rainy, and pretty chilly and sometimes when you play in those conditions the game can get really ugly," Monaghan said. "But we continued to play our style of soccer. A win is a win. I thought we did some very good things today. The big thing that I told the kids is that we should have put away several chances and put the game out of reach. But, it's not easy to win, especially in this conference so I'm happy with that."

Despite missing numerous scoring chances during the game, Lisi's goal was all the team needed to bring home the win.

The Tigers outshot Temple 26-4 and the had seven corner kicks, as opposed to the Owls' one corner kick.

Lisi ended the match with seven total shots, six of which were on target. The Tigers team forced Temple goalkeeper Jordan Nash to make a career high 17 saves. Memphis' goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel made just two saves, but came up huge in the closing minutes to ensure the win. It was Bard-Martel's fourth shutout of the season and the 22nd of her career.

The Tigers stay on the road for their next match at UConn on Sunday in Storrs, Connecticut. The Tigers know they will have their hands full with the nationally ranked team.

"We know UConn is good and they have some strong returning players," Monaghan said. "We know we will have to get better with the end product going into Sunday."

Following the UConn road trip, the Tigers will be back home for three straight conference matchups. Their first match of the three will be against East Carolina on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m. They close out the three game stretch against Cincinnati on October 9 at 1 p.m. and against Tulsa on October 14 at 7 p.m.
