FCC approves measure to amplify emergency alert system

Federal regulators are amplifying emergency cellphone alerts like the one used in New York during the search for a bombing suspect earlier this month.

The Federal Communications Commission approved a measure that will let messages be four times longer than their current 90-character limit.

Officials will be able to include links in messages.

Last month's New York alert had the awkward phrase "see media for pic" rather than a link to a photo.

In addition, the new rules will require cellphone companies to support Spanish messages.
