A lot of great things happened yet again in the Mid-south this week. Here are my top five.

Navy sailor saves driver

Millington sailor Jeffery Atherton was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for bravery, endurance and leadership after saving the life of a woman injured in a crash. On August 26, the Mass Communication Specialist was driving home when he saw a car flip several times on I-40. When Atherton pulled over, he said his navy training kicked and gave the driver CPR and kept her calm until paramedics arrived.

HERo Day

The Memphis Fire Department and Girl Scouts Heart of the South held their second annual "HERo Day." For six hours, 150 mid-south girls between sixth and 12th grade suited up in protective gear, tackling obstacle courses, rappelling down five-story buildings, and putting out mock fires.

Mid-South Junior Chef named "Best Southern Cook"

Master Chef Junior and Memphis native Logan Guleff can now add "Best Southern Cook" to his list of accomplishments. The 14 year old's Southern Classic Shrimp and Grits landed him the Southern Living award. The dish also granted Logan a spot on the TODAY Show, as well as a sixth Shorty Awards nomination.

Jett family memorial fundraiser

You can help hundreds of Memphis families and honor the children killed in the Severson Avenue fire. To honor their memory, Cummings Elementary School is creating a Family Resource Center, complete with a washer and dryer so students can have clean uniforms. WMC Action News 5 is partnering with Shelby County Schools and the SchoolSeed Foundation to hold a fundraiser to help make the resource center a success.

Blue Ribbon Schools

Two Shelby County Schools received national honors by being named 2016 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Jackson Elementary and John P. Freeman Optional School received the national honor because of their work in closing the student achievement gaps. The two schools are among 279 public schools that have been given the honor.
