MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

The family of a murdered mother is hoping that her death will not be in vain and that other families will not have to suffer the same fate.

Family and loved ones gathered Friday night for a vigil in honor of Marnesha Scales. Scales was gunned down on Arbor Lake Drive, the very same location her loved ones now stood for a vigil.

They are hoping to send an important message to young people--put the guns down.

The violence left a small child without a mother.

"She is asking for her mom," Marnesha's aunt Chasity Ward said.

Chloe, 2, can't understand why her mother has not come home.

The 18-year-old, known as NeNe to many, was sitting in the car late Tuesday night when another car pulled up and started firing shots, according to police. Now, her family is calling for an end to the violence.

"My message to these young people is put the guns down," Ward said.

It's a message shared by the family and loved ones of Scales, especially as reality set in that she is not coming home.

They said although she is gone, it is a legacy that will not be forgotten. It's a legacy that is already being carried on...through the life of a 2-year-old.

There has been no arrest in the case and family members are urging anyone with information to call the Shelby County Sheriff's Office.
