Sandpoint, ID (WMC/NBC) -

The first ever solar road panels were unveiled in North Idaho, Sandpoint to be exact. The panels contain LED lights to create lines and signage without paint and heating elements to prevent snow and ice accumulation. The panels will be tested on walkways and sidewalks first before being installed on the road. One criticism is the new road could be pricey for taxpayers, but officials in Idaho say they're happy to be the first to "show off the new innovation."

Heated streets that keep ice and snow from accumulating would be a game changers for drivers. But for motorcyclists it would be an even bigger deal. Winter roads free of ice and snow would clearly extend the riding season for most motorcyclists in cold weather states.

Whether this cool idea will heat up, and heat other roads across the country...is still to be seen. Stay tuned.
