A pedestrian in a wheelchair was hit by a car Highland Street and Windover Road.

Investigators said a woman driving a truck crashed into the man in the wheelchair who was crossing in a crosswalk.

The man in the wheelchair sustained non-critical injuries.

The driver of the truck remained on scene. It's unclear if anyone will face charges at this time.

Other pedestrians who frequent the area said it's a dangerous place to walk.

"If you try to go that way by the time you go halfway the traffic will start and somebody will run you over," pedestrian Roy Keys said.

Keys is legally blind. He's afraid for his safety because cars often whiz through the area at speeds up to 60 miles an hour.

Police would not say how fast the driver was going or if she will face any charges. She told WMC Action News 5 she's sorry and hopes the pedestrian recovers quickly.

Friday night around 10:30 there was a hit-and-run accident near South Parkway and Driver streets. At last check the pedestrian was in critical condition.

"We do have an uptick in pedestrian crashes," Memphis Police Department Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Bass said. "We don't know what's bringing all this about. We're asking drivers to use additional caution when they are driving."

Keys said the city could make Windover and Highland safer by giving pedestrians like him more time to cross the street.
