MARKED TREE, AR (WMC) -

A grandmother and her great-grandson died in an early morning house fire on Monday.

The house fire started around 1 a.m. Monday in Marked Tree, Arkansas.

Neighbors woke up and tried to desperately help save the two people inside the house.

Anita Eaten said she woke up with two of her neighbors banging on her front door.

"Trying to get help. Trying to get help," Eaten said.

Help couldn't come fast enough. Eaten said Laura Wilson, who was in her mid 70s, and her great-grandson, Joseph, both died in the fire.

Three other people living inside the house, including a 4-year-old girl, ran out the back door to safety.

"The baby was 2 years old," Eaten said. "You can't make sense of it. You never know what's going to happen."

A firefighter, who lives next door, kept watch on the house before a state fire investigator arrived on the scene. He said he tried to use his own hose to fight the flames.

"It's heart wrenching. It's heartbreaking," Robert Gaddis said. "It affects everybody. It's like a domino effect."

Eaten said it is going to be very difficult to carry on living here.

"I don't even want to look behind my house anymore," Eaten said. "I would come out every day and look and see her on the porch and wave at her. It's going to be hard."

Investigators have not said what caused the fire.
