A former high school teacher is in jail accused of sending sexual text messages to a student.

Donald Emory Jr. worked at Freedom Prep Academy in South Memphis until he was fired on September 22 when the school learned of the allegations.

Two days before that, a parent of a Freedom Prep Academy student contacted police about a teacher at the school. The parent said she found inappropriate text messages from Emory to her 15-year-old son.

The school's director of marketing and communications said the school took swift action and fired Emory the day after the claims were made.

The boy's mother said she was unhappy that the school did nothing other than fire Emory.

Residents in the neighborhood where Emory resides said there are a lot of children running around the streets and they should have been told.

"It would be just as concerning if it were my child," Charles Leggins said.

Many people believe if Emory is convicted for the charges, he should not be allowed around children again.

"If he is convicted of this and he is guilty of the implications, no he shouldn't be placed over our children," Leggins said.

Freedom Prep Academy released the following statement concerning the incident.

We were saddened to learn of the situation. Freedom Prep is committed to keeping our students safe and their overall well-being is our top priority. We are cooperating with authorities and our number one focus continues to be our students and preparing them to excel in college and in life.

Memphis Police Department found and arrested Emory on October 3. He is charged with several charges of sexual exploitation and solicitation of a minor.
