A Ripley police officer faces drug possession charges after being arrested on Monday.

Stephen Michael Kirkpatrick is charged in Lauderdale County with drug possession and official misconduct. He has since bonded out of jail.

The officer has been placed on leave without pay as police investigate.

According to the city attorney, Kirkpatrick was hired as a patrolman in July 2014. Before that, he was a reserve officer.

Our archives also show Kirkpatrick was previously indicted for felony child abuse and false reporting, but those charges are not listed in the county system. That could mean those charges were dropped or have been expunged.

Residents in Ripley were shocked to hear the news.

"He's supposed to be serving the public," Marcellous Bond said.

The city attorney said the city became aware that he had criminal charges while he was working as a reserve officer several years ago and at that time he was placed on inactive status. Now, he's back on leave without pay after Monday's arrest for drug charges.

"I was kind of surprised when I first heard he was a police officer because I was aware of some of the charges that he had been at one point," Carolyn Drumwright, Ripley resident, said. "I'm devastated for his family. He has a loving family."

Few details are being released on the arrest because it's an "ongoing investigation."
