MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Students at the University of Memphis held a silent protest Wednesday.

Black Student Association members dressed in black, stood in a circle around the tiger statue outside University Center, and held signs with messages of support for African Americans.

A student involved in the protest said it was done in response to the hateful vandalism against a black University of Memphis student athlete.

Nicole Lawson's car was vandalized and a note using a racial slur and hate speech was left on her car. Many Mid-Southerners reached out to Lawson to help repair her car, but due to NCAA rules, she is not allowed to accept any money. She said she would instead donate the money to charitable causes in her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina.
