MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

Heroin overdose deaths have nearly tripled in Memphis in 2016.

Following the release of a video showing two Memphians overdosing in the Medical District, City of Memphis released the number of heroin deaths over the past four years.

The number of heroin deaths per year, according to City of Memphis is as follows:

  • 2013 = 24
  • 2014 = 33
  • 2015 = 27
  • 2016 = 74

People in Memphis said they can't believe how much heroin is out there--some of it more lethal than usual.

"I'm hearing a lot of overdoses for fentanyl laced drugs. Heroin is bad enough, but it seems like it is getting worse."

Steven Watts is a treatment specialist in Memphis. He said the Bluff City has a big problem.

"As far as Memphis, we've got a huge problem with it," Watts said. "There's a lot of heroin, and its cheap."

Professionals said that is the main problem. The drug is not only cheap, but it is highly addictive and easy to get.

Meghan Dawkins, a recovering addict, knows the lure of heroin.

"Once you use it, you are hooked," Dawkins said.
