Tubby Time is Here for University of Memphis Basketball.
Tubby Smith opened his first practice at Tigers Head Coach at the Finch Center Wednesday afternoon.
Smith, a 25 year veteran head coach and future Hall of Famer, said the Tiger team he inherited from Josh Pastner is not a reclamation project, but a squad that's ready to reload.
True, the Tigers have only 10 Scholarship players, but one of them is 6'9" former Hamilton High School product Dedric Lawson, who's expected to begin his Sophomore campaign as the American Athletic Conference PreSeason Player of the Year.
He was the league's Rookie of the Year last season.
Aw, man, 6'9" and can shoot like that, I mean, that's a problem solver right there," Smith said. "I don't know if I've had a young man who can shoot the ball like that at that size since Tayshaun Prince, to be honest with you. So, I'm really excited about coaching this young man. Y'know, he reminds me of Dirk Nowitzki the way he can score the basketball.. That's not putting pressure on him, when you compare him, he's just got that type of Skill Set."
Smith said he'll use Walkons to fill out a roster that has only 10 scholarship players, but hopes to get an 11th if 6'11", 255 pound Egyptian Center Karim Azab can clear immigration.
The Tigers open the Season November 14th against Texas Rio Grand Valley at FedExForum.
