Now that the minor league baseball season has ended, we’re continuing our look at how the St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospects (including Redbirds) performed in 2016.  Last time, we profiled the #8 prospect, RHP Junior Fernandez

  • 8.  Edmundo Sosa  SS
  • 5’11”, 170 lbs.
  • Bats-Right, Throws-Right.

Shortstop Edmundo Sosa was signed as a 16-year-old by the Cardinals for $425,000 during the July 2012 international signing period. That was the biggest bonus payment to a Panamanian player that year.  As an amateur, he showed good eye-hand coordination, a level swing, and good bat control.  As a defender, he showed good range and the instincts and arm to remain at shortstop.

In 2013, playing for the Cardinals’ team in the Dominican Summer League, he hit .314 in 169 at-bats, with a .396 on-base percentage and an OPS of .846.

Sosa played for two teams in 2014, in the Gulf Coast Rookie League and the NY/Penn short season league.  Combined, he hit .274 in 212 at-bats.

Assigned to Johnson City of the Appalachian League in 2015, Sosa rebounded with a .300 average and an .854 OPS in 200 at-bats, slugging .485.

This past season, Sosa split time between A-level teams, playing at both Palm Beach of the Florida State League and Peoria of the Midwest League.  Overall, he hit .270 in 385 at-bats.

Sosa isn’t flashy with the glove – he’s a solid defender with an average, but accurate, arm.  He shows a good approach at the plate, particularly for his age.  He added strength in 2015, and began to show more power in his hitting.  He’s a good baserunner, although that hasn’t translated into many stolen bases yet.

Sosa is easily the Cardinals’ best shortstop prospect, and should be given every chance to play the premium position at the highest level.  As a fallback plan, he should be an above-average second baseman, with a bat that would profile well there. His ETA to St. Louis should be 2018.
