MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

A group of Whitehaven High School alumni have come together to mentor children going to their alma mater.

Over 100 alumni are working to motivate and encourage students toward the future.

Thursday, 2,000 Whitehaven High School students packed the auditorium for the first ever Whitehaven Empowerment Expo.

Tiffani Perry, a Whitehaven alum, said a group of former students planned the expo, which they hope will be an annual event.

“Alumni travel from many states who are here to give back to the students,” Perry said.

Different speakers and workshops helped to work with the students.

Perry hopes hearing the success stories from other Whitehaven Tigers will help the messages hit home for the students.

“What we want them to know is we did it, so can you,” Perry said.

Senior J’Len Smith said all the effort is working.

“This is important for us to see people from similar walks of life being successful in doing what they have to do to get there,” Smith said.

Seeing the alumni come back to their roots encourages Smith to do the same when he can.

“It's something I really thought about doing after I graduate,” Smith said.

Until then, students said they are taking things one step at a time, but they are thankful to have so many surrounding them to help them on the way.
