MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

It was a tough beginning, but Memphis pulled off a win against Temple at the Liberty Bowl, 34-27.

The Tigers were shutout for most of the first half, and managed a field goal just before halftime. They trailed 13-3 at the break with the offense scuffling.

Things picked up in the second half, however, and the Tigers roared back.

Doroland Dorceus got things going with a huge 71 yard carry in the third quarter for the Tigers’ first touchdown.

Less than one minute later, Genard Avery intercepted an Owls pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. The quick 14-point swing put Memphis up, and they’d never relinquish that lead.

Darrell Henderson kept the scoring up in the 4th with a 28 yard rush for another Tigers score.

Temple would pull back with a 61 yard touchdown pass, but Memphis answered on the ensuing kickoff with a 95 yard return by Tony Pollard to maintain the Tigers lead.

Temple had one last chance to tie the game in the fourth, but QB Phillip Walker was picked off by Chauncey Lanier for a game-sealing pick.

The overall stats hint at Temple dominance, but the second half determined the game. The Owls won the total yardage battle 531-323, but their one-dimensional offense resulted in Walker dropping back to pass 59 times. He completed 36 of those for 2 touchdowns and 2 picks.

Big plays carried the Tigers along, as they were dominated in the time of possession battle by 17 minutes. The ultimate make-or-break defense gave up 27 points, but made the big stops when it mattered to seal the game.

Memphis moves to 4-1 on the season and starts off conference play with a win over Temple, who drops to 3-3.

The Tigers will have a few extra days to prepare for next week’s game against Tulane in New Orleans.
