Now that the minor league baseball season has ended, we’re continuing our look at how the St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospects (including Redbirds) performed in 2016.  Last time, we profiled the #7 prospect, SS Edmundo Sosa.

6.  Magneuris Sierra  CF
5’11”, 160 lbs.
Bats-Left, Throws-Left.

Sierra signed with the Cardinals in 2012 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He debuted in the US in the Gulf Coast League in 2014, hitting .386 in 202 at-bats. Not a true power hitter, the slender Sierra still had 12 doubles, three triples, and two home runs, for a slugging percentage of .505.
After that impressive start in the States, he was pushed aggressively to full-season ball in 2015, beginning the year at full-season Peoria of the Midwest League. There, he hit only .191 in 178 at-bats, with 52 strikeouts against only seven walks. He was moved down to Johnson City of the Appalachian League, and bounced back with a .371 batting average in 216 at-bats, with an improved strikeout-to-walk ratio of 42-to-19.

Back at Peoria for the 2016 season, he hit .299 in 428 at-bats, with 21 doubles, three triples, and two home runs. He did strikeout 82 times, but got 21 walks and had the most RBI (50) of any season in his career.

The demotion in 2015 may have slowed his timetable somewhat, but the taste of failure may be a great lesson for Sierra moving forward. He is very athletic, with plus speed that he can use on both offense and defense.

He projects to be a solid defensive centerfielder and a base-stealing threat. Although not a prototypical slugger, he does have considerable strength in his wrists, and as he matures physically he may grow into more home run power.

A promotion to AA is likely for Sierra in 2017, and progress there could land him in St. Louis as early as the end of the 2018 season.
