Helena-West Helena Police Department is investigating after a mother said a teacher hurt her first-grade student.

Officers said the mother filed a report with the police department on September 12 after her daughter came home from JF Wahl Elementary School and showed her bruises on her arm.

The child said her teacher hit her with a ruler, which caused two visible bruises.

Helena-West Helena Chief Virgil Green said the mother took her daughter to the hospital where she was examined. The mother said she's furious that the teacher has been allowed to continue teaching during the investigation.

Brenda Moss said she couldn't believe what her 6-year-old daughter, Banirah, told her when she asked her about the bruises on her arm.

"I said what's wrong. She said the teacher hit me and I said 'why'," Moss said. "She said 'because she not doing her work right'. That ain't no reason for you to put your hands on my child. Why are you hurting my child?"

Moss said she's furious that she filed a police report almost a month ago and the teacher hasn't even been interviewed by police yet. The school district has even allowed the teacher to continue teaching during the investigation.

"That teacher hurt my baby and ain't nothing been done about it," Moss said. "She hurt my child."

Helena-West Helena Police Chief Virgil Green addressed the media and said his detectives are taking this case very seriously.

"This is not something that we're just going to take a report and not take any actions," Green said. "This is something that once we did see the injuries to the child, it led us to open an active investigation."

Moss said she is demanding justice for her child.

"She needs to go to jail," Moss said. "She need to be in jail and something need to be done about it because if it had been me doing something to somebody else's child, they already would have locked me up."

If charged, the teacher could face a felony assault charge.

The name of the teacher has not been released at this time.
