2nd case of West Nile virus confirmed in Shelby County

SHELBY COUNTY, TN (WMC) -

The Shelby County Health Department has confirmed a second case of West Nile Virus has been found in the county.

According to the health department, people can contract West Nile Virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito. West Nile Virus can occasionally cause severe disease, but the health department said most people who are infected have mild infections, resulting in fever, headache, and body aches. 

These symptoms last a few days.

Symptoms of severe disease are high fever, stiff neck, stupor, disorientation, coma, or convulsions.

The health department is urging everyone to practice the 4 D's:

  • Defend yourself by using insect repellent when outside and follow the label instructions.
  • Dress in long sleeves/pants, loose and light colored clothing when outdoors.
  • Dusk/Dawn: stay indoors during this time to avoid mosquitoes when they are most active.
  • Drain standing water and install or repair window screens.
