A family of eight escaped a house fire, thanks to an 11-year-old's quick thinking.

One adult and seven children were inside a home on Tarrywood Drive on Tuesday morning when a fire started inside Ten Mile Creek Apartments.

The 11-year-old heard the smoke alarm and got the rest of his family out of the home, saving their lives.

"I am so proud of him. He is so smart," neighbor Yumekia Harris said.

Hours later the smoke cleared and the extensive damage to this house became visible. The walls were gone and nothing but blackened pieces of wood remained. Very little was left except an ottoman and a few springs from what used to be a mattress.

Harris lives in the apartment complex and knows the family well. She said moments before she heard fire trucks rolling through, she heard an explosion.

Harris said she's proud of the young boy who saved his family, but her pride has since turned to worry. She said the boy is one of eight children to a single mother. She said she knows the family is going to need help staying on its feet.

"She has a neighborhood. We will help her I promise. Baby you are not alone. I promise you," Harris said.

A firefighter sustained a minor injury while putting out the fire. Nobody else was injured.

Red Cross is providing assistance for the family.

Investigators said a candle left burning in the home is to blame for the destructive fire.
