MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) -

First Lady Michelle Obama promoted the power of education in a message to thousands of kids across the globe Tuesday, including students in Memphis.

At Girls Inc. of Memphis, more than 40 girls from all around the city were able to sit down and listen to a live stream with First Lady Michelle Obama while she talked about girl power in education.

"When you hear the phrase 'knowledge is power' and it's true," Obama said.

It's a truth Michelle Obama said she wants spread to as many girls as possible.

That is why the young girls at Girls Incorporated of Memphis were able to live stream with the First Lady, alongside thousands of others.

"I wouldn't be here, in the life I have, if I didn't have an education," Obama said.

Mrs. Obama sent words of encouragement not only to girls in Memphis, but around the world, ranging from Jordan to Tanzania. The girls sent Obama questions through Facebook, on challenges they face in their own communities.

"When you look at me, see me now, as the First Lady, but there's still doubts," Obama said.

Some said the message they received from the First Lady was important.

"They're getting these messages all the time of what they can't do," Lisa Moore, Girls Inc. President, said.

Moore said it's a powerful influence for these girls.

"That makes me feel like I can have a chance to be up there with her too," Madison Perkins, 10, said.

They're taking the First Lady's words and growing more confident in themselves.

"You just cannot be in the same group as haters," India Weeden, 9, said.
